In 2023 a severe drought caused major crop loss and ganado or livestock losses. Pukachupa residents rely on sustenance farming, meaning that what they harvest sustains them throughout the year. Food prices skyrocketed, animals which had been cared for, pasteados (taken out to graze), and nurtured from birth were dying or being sold for extremely low prices due to the animal-feed and water shortage in the region. Today, the work touches many disciplines and has grown to encompass goals of clean water, of restoring relationships with water. Workshops and dialogues have blossomed from the project that we never expected. Particularly of note, during workshops, attendees and community members shared a willingness to learn about and contribute to the q’ocha designs.
